Movement: Stretching Between Sessions Matters More Than You Think

“Think of your training sessions as making a deposit into your health. Stretching between visits helps protect that investment.”
One of the questions we hear most often is:
“If my Exercise Specialist stretches me during our sessions, do I still need to stretch at home?”
The short answer?
Absolutely.
While your Exercise Specialist provides assisted stretching during your sessions, maintaining your flexibility throughout the week is something only you can do. Even a few minutes each day can make a meaningful difference in how you move and feel.
Flexibility Doesn't Last Forever
When we stretch together, we’re improving the mobility of your muscles and joints, reducing stiffness, and helping your body move more efficiently.
But those benefits aren’t permanent.
Our bodies naturally return to familiar movement patterns, especially if we spend much of the day sitting, driving, or working at a desk. Regular stretching helps reinforce the improvements made during your training sessions and can reduce the stiffness that often builds up between visits.
Why Stretching Is Especially Important as We Age
As we get older, muscles and connective tissues naturally become less elastic. Without regular stretching, it’s common to notice:
- Increased stiffness in the morning
- Reduced range of motion
- Difficulty reaching overhead or bending down
- Poorer posture
- More aches and pains during everyday activities
Research published by the American College of Sports Medicine’s Position Stand on Exercise and Physical Activity for Older Adults recommends flexibility exercises as part of a well-rounded fitness program to help maintain mobility and support daily function as we age.
Stretching Helps You Get More Out of Your Exercise
Think of flexibility as giving your body permission to move the way it was designed.
When muscles are less restricted, it’s often easier to:
- Perform strength exercises with better technique
- Improve posture
- Walk more comfortably
- Reach, bend, and lift with greater ease
- Move with less stiffness during everyday activities
Stretching isn’t just about touching your toes—it’s about making everyday movement feel easier.
How Much Is Enough?
The good news is you don’t need an hour-long stretching routine.
For most people, 5–10 minutes a day focusing on the areas that feel the tightest can help maintain flexibility between training sessions.
Consistency matters much more than perfection.
It’s a little like brushing your teeth. Doing it once a week for an hour isn’t nearly as effective as a few minutes every day.
The Coastal Fitness Takeaway
At Coastal Fitness & Correction, our Exercise Specialists incorporate assisted stretching and mobility techniques into your sessions to help improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and support better movement. Through specialized certifications and continuing education in stretching, mobility, and corrective exercise, we’re trained to safely address your individual needs and help you move with greater comfort and confidence.
However, the greatest results come from combining what we do together with a few minutes of stretching on your own between sessions. Regular stretching helps maintain the progress you’ve made, reduce stiffness, and keep your muscles and joints moving the way they were designed to.
Not sure where to start? Just ask your Exercise Specialist. We’ll be happy to recommend a personalized home stretching routine based on your mobility, goals, and any areas of tightness—helping you continue to move better, feel better, and stay active doing the things you love.
