Our Goals as Cancer Exercise Specialists (CES) Include:

Understanding the variables associated with cancer staging, and how they will affect our programming and determining the proper combinations of strength training exercises and stretching protocols.

To create a program that will be safe and effective and to know how and when to progress/regress on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Taking into consideration the individual needs of the client (i.e. Pre-existing medical conditions, muscle imbalances, Limits in range of motion, , etc.) their current/previous level(s) of conditioning while taking precautions to avoid lymphedema and pain.

To incorporate lymph drainage exercises into client programming and educate clients on how to start and progress slowly while being aware of early signs of lymphedema.

Determining proper frequency, intensity, and duration for clients based on their immediate energy limitations to minimize pain and provide a safe environment.

Giving advice on nutrition and exercise and the benefits of weight management during and after cancer treatment

To bring together a network of health and fitness professionals that work as a team to ensure the best outcome for the Client.

Our Approach

Evaluation

After your initial consultation, a comprehensive evaluation of muscle strength, range of motion, cardiovascular, and/or balance will be performed. A thorough discussion of your injury, surgery, or diagnosis, will also be completed by an Exercise Specialist who has extensive training in orthopedic and/or cancer exercise techniques.

Custom Protocol

The specialist will then create a custom protocol for you and set up goals in which progress will be measured with advanced technology.

Measuring Progress

All assessments and workouts are documented in your client-specific profile. Due to the uniqueness of our technology, the data included in progress reports become a vital tool for assessing the progression of your physical recovery that can be shared with your orthopedic surgeon, neurologist, oncologist, and/or healthcare professionals to analyze your particular circumstance.

Program Details

Each program is specific to individual client needs.

On average, each client visits us at our facility 2-3 times per week for 30-minute or 60-minute sessions.

Depending on the client’s condition, every 4-6 weeks a basic exercise assessment may be performed to determine new exercise selection programs or modifications to ensure progress does not plateau.

Injury or Surgery (pre/post-rehab)

Clients may work with a Training Specialist for 14-18 months before transitioning to a regular fitness program, which may be independent or with a trainer.

Orthopedic Disorders or Neuropathies

Depending on the aggressiveness of the condition, clients may work long-term with one of our Corrective Exercise Specialists.

Cancer Diagnosis

Depending on the prognosis, clients may work with a Cancer Exercise Specialist for the duration of treatment.

Many cancer survivors have the ability to transition to a regular fitness program, which may be independent or with a trainer. This is decided on an individual basis with lymph node damage/removal taken into serious consideration.

Although the survival rates for many cancers continue to improve, sadly not every patient with cancer will survive. Fitness and your Cancer Exercise Specialist (CES), along with your Palliative Care Team, still have so much to offer. The CES can assist clients in remaining as active and independent for as long as their disease progression allows. (i.e. ambulating, getting up & down from a chair, etc.)
