Movement: Warming Up Before Exercise

Whether it’s mobilizing tender muscles, flowing through dynamic stretches, or going for a gentle walk, warming up before exercise is vital to the performance of your body during your workout. Here are three simple benefits of warming up that help your body maximize its efforts for your workout:

1. Increased Blood Flow

“Warm-up” is a literal term—it refers to the body physically increasing in temperature. This happens as blood flow is directed to muscles that may be cold or underactive. Over the course of daily activity, many muscles or muscle groups can become shortened and tight. A proper warm-up helps lengthen and activate these muscles, allowing the entire body—also known as the kinetic chain—to work together efficiently and generate energy for your workout.

2. Flexibility and Range of Motion

A proper warm-up helps your body achieve a full, comfortable range of motion. With this improved mobility, you’re better prepared to take on more demanding movement patterns. Increased flexibility and joint readiness also play a key role in reducing the risk of injury. As a result, your body can move more efficiently through larger, more dynamic exercises.

3. Neuromuscular Connection

Each muscle is activated by signals sent from the brain. During a warm-up, the brain begins to engage the neural pathways needed to effectively fire each muscle and muscle group. This is especially important in corrective exercise, where the brain can reestablish lost neuromuscular control by reactivating muscles that may have been previously “turned off.”
