Movement: Motion and Recovery

After injury or heavy work on the body, it’s important to rest and recover. While it is crucial to take appropriate time without movement where necessary, motion can actually aid the recovery process. Whether it’s stretching, activating muscles, or gentle movement, motion of the body can greatly support recovery.
5 Ways Motion Supports Recovery
- Improved Circulation and Muscle Activation
Inviting gentle movement to the body like stretching or light mobility can bring circulation to those muscles. It activates the muscles and allows the brain to continue to fire messages down neural pathways to the muscles.
- Mental and Emotional Well-being
Moving your body releases endorphins which benefit your mental and emotional well-being. Recovery can bring bouts of anxiety or depression, and endorphins help to combat the mental and emotional stress that can come with the recovery process.
- Injury Prevention
When recovering, the body can be in a compromised position. This may mean that certain muscle groups take over for others and compensate which can lead to muscle imbalances. Adding motion (like a Corrective Exercise protocol) can improve muscle imbalances and strengthen even during recovery.
- Flexibility and Functional Movement
Recovery from injury or a heavy workout is about regaining your body’s ability to move and function in a way that benefits you. Adding a stretching protocol or gentle movements help your body reset and return to a functional state of mobility.
- Prevention of Scar Tissue
After any injury or surgery, scar tissue can form to aid the body’s healing. While scar tissue formation is a normal function of your body to heal wounds, it can lead to limited mobility, less flexibility, and potential pain. Inviting controlled movement into your recovery process can help limit and prevent scar tissue buildup.
