Movement: Cross Training

What is cross training?

Cross training involves utilizing a variety of exercise modalities in your fitness routine. The benefit of cross training is to challenge the body in different ways of movement and endurance.

What does a cross training routine look like?

Cross training could involve a varied schedule of workouts. For example, someone who cross trains might have a schedule that looks like working with a personal trainer doing strength training twice a week, riding their bike for 30 minutes three times a week, taking yoga once or twice a week, and taking a rest day once a week.

Why do cross training?

Cross training allows you to build a fitness routine that works best for your body and your goals. It also challenges your body to move in different ways and build endurance. The more repetitive motions and actions you do over a long period of time, the more muscles are likely to adapt to those specific movement patterns and potentially precipitate muscle imbalances.

For example, if someone runs for 1-2 hours every day as their only form of exercise, they could lack muscle strength from proper strength training or mobility from a stretch routine. Or if someone only lifts heavy weights in the gym several times a week, they could suffer from muscle tightness, lack of mobility, and poor endurance.

Thus, the benefit of cross training is to incorporate all three aspects of fitness together: resistance training, cardiovascular, and mobility/stretching.

What does corrective exercise have to do with cross training?

Corrective exercise can be of great benefit to cross training as it targets muscle imbalances that could become present due to any circumstances, related to age, injury, body composition, repetitive movement, or much more. Adding corrective exercise is a fantastic boost to cross training to prepare muscle for more varied ranges of motion and different fitness modalities.
