Mood: Positive Self-Talk

If you’re ever experiencing a low mental day, take a moment to search on the web for Olympians’ self-talk practices. Some videos show Olympians talking to themselves right before a race or a match. You’ll notice how they encourage themselves and use their mental strength to stay present.

The success of a fitness journey is often reliant on this kind of powerful self-talk. Here are some ways you can incorporate positive self-talk:

Identify Any Negative Self-Talk Patterns

Notice when negative thoughts might arise. Notice what happens before they arise and what’s happening when they’re present. Try to identify any triggers and then control what you can to keep yourself safe from triggers that would start a negative thought spiral.

Stay Present

It’s easy to look to the future or to look back and think about what your body used to be able to do or think about what you want your body to do down the road. Keep your mind focused on today. Remind yourself that the work you do today matters here and now.

Use the 2nd or 3rd Person

Talk about yourself like you would to or about a friend. Say, “She/You can do this,” versus, “I can do this.” Taking this step back will help you find more compassion and energy to support yourself. When you reframe like you’re speaking to a friend, you begin to see yourself in a more objective, fair light.

Practice Your Self-Talk

Use your positive self-talk whenever you can. When you wake up: “You woke up today and got started. Good for you!” When you eat breakfast: “You made a meal of substance to help you start the day. Nice work!” Choose as many moments throughout the day as you can to identify actual facts of how you care for yourself and your overall well-being and fitness.

Be Okay with Down Days

Down days happen. If you know you’re having a day that is hard where you might feel a lack of energy, be okay with feeling a little different. Celebrate the small wins when you can: getting out of bed, showing up to your work, walking your dog, etc. Every day is different, and down days can happen.

Remember that how you talk to yourself frames your perspective on yourself. Your brain and mind hear what you say.
