Food: Eating Out and Healthy Choices

Whether it’s a night out with family and friends or a quick, necessary stop for essential food, eating out can present a challenge to making healthy choices for your diet and lifestyle. So many factors like cooking methods, portion sizes, and added sides or sauces can impact the quality of the meal you eat out. Consider some of these helpful tips from ACE Fitness to aid in supporting your best and healthiest meal out and about.

Read the Menu Thoughtfully

Carefully read the menu, including all listed ingredients and additions. Whenever possible, read the menu before eating out and create a plan that can help you best support your own personal goals to help you stick to your regular diet as best as possible. Check each item for quality ingredients. How is the meal made? Is it deep-fat fried? Packed with sodium? Does it contain extra sauces that could hide extra calories, sugars, etc.? Thoughtfully consider all the elements included so that you can wisely choose what you want to eat.

Stick to the Basics: Protein, Fiber, and Healthy Fats

When in doubt, stick to what you know works best for your body and powers it: high-quality protein, healthy fat, and foods high in fiber. Look for foods that feature these elements, such as grilled fish tacos with guacamole and salsa. Be aware of foods high in saturated fats, sodium, and added sugar. If you find a dish that has additions you don’t want, ask if or what can be removed. Choose a simple dish that you know will make your body feel full and content.

Watch Portion Sizes and Sides

Portion sizes can often be generous to what your body actually needs to eat for a meal. Consider the size of plate you usually eat at home when you thoughtfully plan meals and compare that with the meal you have when you are out. Be present with your meal when you eat out. Enjoy the whole process! When or if you feel full, listen to what your body is telling you and make the best decision to limit your portion to your normal.

Monitor Drinks

Drinks of all kinds can contain calories and added sugars. Consider what it is that you are drinking when you are out and how it could be adding unnecessarily to your diet. While it is important to stay hydrated and while some drinks contain healthy vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, the addition of other elements may not be to your benefit. Liquids are much more easily digested and metabolized by your body, and they may often not give the same satiety that a fibrous meal of food can. Monitor what it is you’re drinking and whether you find it necessary for your meal out.

Above all, remember that mindfulness is key. Enjoy your meal when you eat out! Be thoughtful about your choices, own your choices, and simply enjoy being out and experiencing the craft of cuisine. At Coastal Fitness and Correction, a corrective exercise journey means supporting how you make choices in your everyday life—like eating out. Enjoy the experience with pride, knowing that you made the best possible decisions for you, your body, and your fitness goals!

Movement: Adding Motion to Everyday Life

There is a lot that goes on throughout your day that can lend itself to sedentary routine. We drive to work or school, we might sit at a desk to work all day, or we may sit down in the evening to enjoy time to relax and unwind. There are so many ways we can incorporate just small bits of movement back into our day to promote an active lifestyle. Consider these tips from ACE Fitness that implement more movement in your day!

Add physical activity where possible in your commute or errands

Consider whether you’re able to bike or walk to work. If not, park further away from the building and enjoy a longer walk. Take the stairs when possible. If you have errands or chores to run, plan out ways you can implement a little more movement.

Incorporate movement into your workday

Standing desks and walking pads have recently been implemented to combat sitting at a desk for a full workday. Judge whether these would work well for you. If not, set an alarm on your watch or phone to stand up every hour. Run to the restroom, grab some water, take out your lunch trash—find something that will help you get just a bit of movement.

Keep exercising

Maintain your exercise routine and stay active. Plan a well-balanced exercise routine that can help you meet your fitness goals and help you stay physically functional and mobile. Bring light activity to your days, like taking walks, playing with your children or pets, or just finding ways to actively be involved in your life.

Whatever it may be, there are so many ways to bring more movement into your life to promote an active lifestyle. At Coastal Fitness and Correction, we know how important functional mobility is as a part of your corrective exercise journey. We’re committed to helping you walk the path to a lifestyle that feels full, active, and enjoyable!

Mood: How Exercise Impacts Your Brain

There’s something powerful about the way physical exercise affects the brain. No matter the busy day, implementing exercise into your daily routine has amazing benefits to your mental health and overall well-being. Check out how exercise and the brain work together to support your well-being with ideas from this ACE Fitness article.

Neurotransmitters: Endorphins and Serotonin

Endorphins

There are two types of neurotransmitters in the brain that help you feel good from exercising: serotonin and endorphins. Any type of endurance-based exercise will release endorphins into the brain. These brain chemicals are your body’s natural painkiller. Rather than focusing on pain, your body instead feels pleasure and calm. This is the feeling that is often referred to as a “runner’s high.”

Serotonin

Exercise also promotes the release of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is the brain’s “happy chemical.” While endorphins block pain, serotonin simply produces a sensation of pleasure for the brain. A lack of serotonin can lead to depressive symptoms and behaviors. Therefore, exercise is one of the ways you can boost serotonin production to combat depression.

Strength Training

While aerobic training has often been credited with releasing the “feel good” chemicals in the brain, recent studies have also linked strength training with weights to positive impacts in the brain. All levels of resistance training—bodyweight work, resistance bands, free weights, and heavy weights—have been linked to better mental health and the reduction of depression-related illnesses.

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF)

Exercise has also been shown to improve BDNF which relates to the health and survival of neurons. Exercise boosts BDNF, resulting in more neural strength, combatting depression, and helping memory and learning as well.

At Coastal Fitness and Correction, we encourage you to remember the full benefits of exercise in how it impacts you in a holistic sense. Whether it be in your corrective exercise journey or other exercise, keep in mind that you are bringing health not only to your body physically but to your mind as well when you commit to your exercise routine.

Beverly International Highlight of the Month: Multiple Enzyme Complex

Multiple Enxyme Complex

If you’re tired of post-meal bloat, Multiple Enzyme Complex can assist in meal digestion and help you feel better after eating.

Benefits of Multiple Enzyme Complex

 1. Convert more food into muscle. Multiple Enzyme Complex helps lighten the load of the body on digestion. It aids in digesting all types of calories—protein, carbohydrates, and fats.
 2. Good for your body as you age. Once you hit 40 years old, your stomach no longer has the “iron-clad” resiliency to digest everything you eat with the same quality as when you were younger. Multiple Enzyme Complex gives your body the boost it needs to have better quality of digestion.
 3. Good for dietary restrictions. If you have any dietary restrictions or eat a diet that may be low on one of your macros, Multiple Enzyme Complex will help digesting any of your macros easier on your body.
 4. Relief from bloating and gas. It might be common for food to sit in the stomach for 2-4 hours after eating and cause bloating, making you feel like digestion simply isn’t happening. Multiple Enzyme Complex provides enzymes that will help your body start and continue the digestion process, letting your body feel less bloated and gassy.
 5. A tummy “tune-up.” If you’re looking to reset your microbiome, Multiple Enzyme Complex could be the perfect product for you. Taking 1-2 tablets on an empty stomach once daily to help clean out your stomach and intestines of bacteria or other unwanted material.

Multiple Enzyme Complex can help you digest your meals more easily, provide relief from digestion-related discomfort, and help clean out and refresh your digestion system. At Coastal Fitness and Correction, a corrective exercise journey means commitment to your whole body which includes your digestion. Contact us today to ask about Multiple Enzyme Complex and order yours today!

Food: Digestion and Exercise

Did you know that physical activity and exercise can have an impact on your body’s digestion? Because of how your body is built, including an exercise regimen can support your body’s ability to digest and process food. There are several ways that exercise benefits your body’s digestion:

Increased Gut Motility

Exercise in and of itself promotes movement of the body and strengthens muscles. When you exercise, this can strengthen the muscles around your intestines to promote movement of food and energy through the body. This can lead to less constipation and more regulation of the digestive system.

Improved Blood Flow

Exercise also develops blood flow throughout the body. The more blood flows, the more organs and tissues can complete necessary processes. This includes organs that support your digestive system.

Stress Reduction

Stress can cause tension on the body and lead to imbalances for the digestive system. Exercise produces endorphins and other hormones and chemicals to aid your body. This can relieve stress in the body which could present itself in the gut, such as bloating and gas.

Nutrient Absorption

Because exercise promotes blood flow and regulation of the digestive system, this means that essential nutrients could be more easily absorbed. The healthier the food you consume and the more dedicated you are to your exercise regimen, the more nutrients your body will continue to absorb.

Both food and exercise, even a corrective exercise program like we offer at Coastal Fitness and Correction, aid in your body’s digestion. Take mindful steps to stay dedicated to an exercise regimen and let it assist you not only in the ways your body can move but also in the ways your body can move and process the benefit of your food.

Movement: Cross Training https://coastalfitnessandcorrection.com/movement-cross-training/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 20:31:57 +0000 https://coastalfitnessandcorrection.com/?p=959 Learn how cross training and corrective exercise can be combined for a well-rounded fitness routine.

The post Movement: Cross Training appeared first on Coastal Fitness and Correction.

]]>

Movement: Cross Training

What is cross training?

Cross training involves utilizing a variety of exercise modalities in your fitness routine. The benefit of cross training is to challenge the body in different ways of movement and endurance.

What does a cross training routine look like?

Cross training could involve a varied schedule of workouts. For example, someone who cross trains might have a schedule that looks like working with a personal trainer doing strength training twice a week, riding their bike for 30 minutes three times a week, taking yoga once or twice a week, and taking a rest day once a week.

Why do cross training?

Cross training allows you to build a fitness routine that works best for your body and your goals. It also challenges your body to move in different ways and build endurance. The more repetitive motions and actions you do over a long period of time, the more muscles are likely to adapt to those specific movement patterns and potentially precipitate muscle imbalances.

For example, if someone runs for 1-2 hours every day as their only form of exercise, they could lack muscle strength from proper strength training or mobility from a stretch routine. Or if someone only lifts heavy weights in the gym several times a week, they could suffer from muscle tightness, lack of mobility, and poor endurance.

Thus, the benefit of cross training is to incorporate all three aspects of fitness together: resistance training, cardiovascular, and mobility/stretching.

What does corrective exercise have to do with cross training?

Corrective exercise can be of great benefit to cross training as it targets muscle imbalances that could become present due to any circumstances, related to age, injury, body composition, repetitive movement, or much more. Adding corrective exercise is a fantastic boost to cross training to prepare muscle for more varied ranges of motion and different fitness modalities.

At Coastal Fitness and Correction, our commitment to your whole corrective exercise experience includes work you do outside of our studios. If you’re curious about cross training and incorporating other elements of fitness in your journey, let’s start a conversation about what works best for you, your goals, and your body!

Mood: Positive Self-Talk https://coastalfitnessandcorrection.com/mood-positive-self-talk/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 20:26:21 +0000 https://coastalfitnessandcorrection.com/?p=953 Speak power into your fitness journey by looking at ways to incorporate positive self-talk.

The post Mood: Positive Self-Talk appeared first on Coastal Fitness and Correction.

Mood: Positive Self-Talk

If you’re ever experiencing a low mental day, take a moment to search on the web for Olympians’ self-talk practices. Some videos show Olympians talking to themselves right before a race or a match. You’ll notice how they encourage themselves and use their mental strength to stay present.

The success of a fitness journey is often reliant on this kind of powerful self-talk. Here are some ways you can incorporate positive self-talk:

Identify Any Negative Self-Talk Patterns

Notice when negative thoughts might arise. Notice what happens before they arise and what’s happening when they’re present. Try to identify any triggers and then control what you can to keep yourself safe from triggers that would start a negative thought spiral.

Stay Present

It’s easy to look to the future or to look back and think about what your body used to be able to do or think about what you want your body to do down the road. Keep your mind focused on today. Remind yourself that the work you do today matters here and now.

Use the 2nd or 3rd Person

Talk about yourself like you would to or about a friend. Say, “She/You can do this,” versus, “I can do this.” Taking this step back will help you find more compassion and energy to support yourself. When you reframe like you’re speaking to a friend, you begin to see yourself in a more objective, fair light.

Practice Your Self-Talk

Use your positive self-talk whenever you can. When you wake up: “You woke up today and got started. Good for you!” When you eat breakfast: “You made a meal of substance to help you start the day. Nice work!” Choose as many moments throughout the day as you can to identify actual facts of how you care for yourself and your overall well-being and fitness.

Be Okay with Down Days

Down days happen. If you know you’re having a day that is hard where you might feel a lack of energy, be okay with feeling a little different. Celebrate the small wins when you can: getting out of bed, showing up to your work, walking your dog, etc. Every day is different, and down days can happen.

Remember that how you talk to yourself frames your perspective on yourself. Your brain and mind hear what you say. Your corrective exercise journey is about more than just physical fitness, it involves your mental health as well. At Coastal Fitness and Correction, we want to encourage you to speak to yourself with truth and kindness. Give yourself both grace and challenges equally measured with a mind that speaks to you with encouragement and honesty.

Food: Eating for Muscle Recovery

Whether it’s from a workout or doing housework, our muscles can experience soreness and fatigue. Even with a corrective exercise journey, muscles take a toll as your body works to build better form and overall balance. Because of this, it’s important to allow muscles to recover and rebuild strength. This includes planning and executing a diet that supports your fitness goals and overall well-being. Here are some tips for supporting muscle repair and recovery through good nutrition according to the National Academy for Sports Medicine (NASM).

Energy Balance & Availability

Your body takes account of the energy you spend versus the available energy. When there is an imbalance between the two, the body can have low energy available to perform necessary tasks or to workout. You may find yourself getting fatigued, sluggish, or tired out more easily than normal.

Remember the 3 T’s:

Total-Align your total caloric intake with your training/activity requirements and goals.

Type-Involve a healthy balance of proteins for muscle synthesis and growth, carbohydrates to replenish energy and glycogen stores, and healthy fats for inflammation and overall well-being.

Timing-Strategically time your meals throughout the day around daily activities and workouts to prevent energy depletion.

Micronutrients and Antioxidants

Micronutrients help support normal metabolism, growth, and physical well-being. Consider that most of your diet should include 50-75% plant-powered foods, healthy fats, and plenty of protein. Create balance in your diet by eating fruits and vegetables rich in color, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and spices.

Hydration

Ensure that you drink plenty of water to lubricate joints, support body temperature, and transport nutrients through the body. Checking the color of your urine and understanding how your body feels are the best ways to regulate hydration. Dehydration can be apparent with fatigue, dizziness, and sluggishness. Staying hydrated leads to less muscle soreness, distribution of nutrients to help build muscles, and stimulated blood flow.

If you’re curious about how you can better use nutrition to support your corrective exercise journey, talk to us today about a nutrition package. At Coastal Fitness and Correction, we are committed to helping you with each step towards your fitness goals.
